The Varsity Jr has Closed
To our Friends and Valued Customers:
We have known for some time that the Varsity Jr. would have to be either completely renovated or replaced. The original building was poorly designed and constructed. Over the years we have enlarged, renovated and patched it up as best we could. Finally, the decision was made to replace the building.
We set about with our restaurant architect to come up with a new design in line with the newer Varsities, only smaller. The plans were completed and submitted to the City of Atlanta for approval. We were ready to begin a process of reconstruction with the goal of reopening within 120 days. The new building was to have a drive-thru window, all new landscaping and paving, an indoor children's play area and best of all, indoor restrooms!
After the first of the year and after receiving preliminary approvals, the City of Atlanta started to place more and more restrictions on our plans. We did our utmost to compromise and satisfy their objections. Unfortunately, no agreement could be reached on certain issues critical to our operation. Therefore, we have made the decision to close The Varsity Jr. on August 22, 2010 and abandon any plans for a brand new restaurant on the Lindbergh Drive site.
This has been one of the hardest decisions the Varsity family has had to make in our 82 years of operation. The Varsity Jr. has been around 45 years and is a favorite for northside Atlantans. We deeply regret the obvious disappointment that many of you will feel. All of us at The Varsity want to extend our appreciation to our loyal Varsity Jr. customers. Thank you for all the great years.
The only good news out of this is that our other five locations are doing great. Please come enjoy continued Varsity tradition at the location nearest you. We are taking our new Varsity Jr. plans to Dawsonville. It is slated to open before Christmas 2010.
